Griffin Print Head Advancements

The Griffin Print Head, previously offered as an optional upgrade, now takes center stage as the default print head across our entire printer lineup. This transformative addition represents a significant leap forward in our offerings, boasting a fusion of innovation and engineering excellence. The Griffin Print Head, a collaborative creation comprising a bespoke Bondtech extruder (based on the BMG model) and a pioneering hotend meticulously crafted by Modix, encapsulates a series of pioneering enhancements.

Enhanced Performance and Versatility

  • High Flow Rate & Elevated Printing Temperatures: Empowered by a dual drive-gear system, the Bondtech extruder seizes filament from both flanks, ushering in augmented flow rates and enhanced compatibility with elevated printing temperatures. The heat-block, meticulously forged from nickel-coated copper, accelerates heat transfer efficiency, facilitating seamless operation at higher temperatures. A cutting-edge Slice Engineering Bi-Metal heat-break extends the melting zone within the heat-block, predominantly crafted from copper. The integration of an advanced PT-1000 temperature sensor further equips the print head to confidently navigate temperatures up to 500°C, backed by the stout resilience of hotend components validated for up to 500°C and tested successfully at 340°C.

  • Increased Reliability: Confronting the challenges of large-scale 3D printing head-on, the new print head bolsters reliability by introducing a robust heat-block mounting configuration. This arrangement, bolstered by a tri-faced mounting structure, offers inherent rigidity and resolute resistance against potential mishaps such as scratching or collisions with voluminous models. The formidable heat-block bracing, stemming from this novel design, stands as a bulwark, mitigating the risk of damage.

  • Streamlined User Experience: The redesigned print-head architecture simplifies nozzle replacements, facilitated by the secure, single-handed heat-block detachment. This seamless process ensures effortless transition between various nozzle diameters, amplifying user convenience.

  • Effortless Filament Adaptation: The novel mounting bracket design and the D shaft configuration of the Slice Engineering heat-break synergize to enable swift and hassle-free substitution of the entire filament melting subsystem. This innovation empowers users to swiftly transition between dedicated setups tailored for specific filament types—be it abrasive carbon-infused filament or PLA prototypes.

  • Space-Savvy Design: The enhanced print-head design retains the compactness of its predecessor while preserving generous Z-axis travel capabilities. This thoughtful evolution harmonizes seamlessly with the extensive range of E3D Volcano nozzles, encompassing an array of sizes and materials.

  • Smart Calibration: The upgraded print-head enables automatic Z offset calibration between the nozzle and the BL Touch probe, streamlining the calibration process. A dedicated sensor ensures accurate calibration and stores the relative distance between the probe and the nozzle.

Note that for temperatures surpassing 300°C, it is essential to replace the brass nozzle with a higher-temperature compatible alternative.

IDEX Dual Printing Add-On

With Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) technology, the Modix printer can print models with internal geometries and dense support layers. This add-on reduces post-processing effort and enhances success rates for complex prints.

The IDEX solution is available as an optional add-on for all Generation 4 printers but is included in this professional bundle, providing the following components:

  • Secondary Printing Subsystem: Includes the Griffin print head, clog detector, PTFE, and spool mount.
  • Motion System: Incorporates a secondary Y-axis motor along with necessary components such as belts and pulleys.
  • Metal Brackets: Equips both the Y-axis and print heads with sturdy metal brackets.
  • Wires, Drag Chains, and Optical End-stops: All essential wiring, drag chains, and optical end-stops are thoughtfully included.

Automatic Filament Changer

The IDEX system doubles as an automatic filament changer, streamlining print workflows and ensuring uninterrupted operation. When utilizing the same filament for both print heads, the printer adeptly switches between them as soon as a filament run-out is detected. This innovation offers a host of advantages:

Enhanced Efficiency: Addressing a key challenge in 3D printing, the incessant need for vigilant monitoring and intervention is mitigated. This is particularly crucial when prolonged printing sessions risk an overnight stall due to the depletion of filament. The Modix IDEX Filament Changer steps in as a solution, enabling the printer to autonomously swap filament spools. The result is an uninterrupted, round-the-clock operation, minimizing downtime that would otherwise be required for manual intervention.

Elevated Print Precision: The advantages of the Modix IDEX Filament Changer extend beyond time-saving. By obviating the need to open the enclosure for manual servicing, the printer retains its chamber temperature, preventing potential shrinkage of partially printed models. This pivotal aspect enhances print quality by maintaining optimal conditions, reducing defects, and fostering the creation of superior prints. Elevating your 3D printing endeavors to new heights becomes feasible with the Modix IDEX add-on.

Print Surface and Removable Magnetic Bed

The Alcoa Mic6 milled cast aluminum plate offers a consistent and level print surface. An optional removable magnetic bed add-on simplifies print removal and maintenance.

Modix printers come with a default PEI sheet that releases prints when the bed cools down. The removable magnetic bed add-on eliminates waiting and spatula work – objects can be instantly removed by bending the spring steel plate.

The add-on has an adhesive magnetic sheet for the aluminum bed plate and a removable spring steel plate on top. The flexible spring steel plate is dual-sided: one side is textured with PEI powder coating, while the other is smooth with a glossy PEI sheet for a polished finish.

  • 6.35mm thick, Alcoa Mic6 milled cast aluminum plate, made in the USA.
  • AC powered bed heater 1370 Watt (1,200 Watt for 110V users). Requires a dedicated independent 15A AC source.
  • Dual heating zones. Inner 200X200mm size for small objects and lower power consumption.
  • Max temperature – 110oc  (with enclosure)
  • Print surface – PEI film with 3M high temp adhesive sheet.

Clog Detector

Previously an optional add-on and now default with every printer, is an improvement to the printer’s reliability. The clog detector is provided with a custom highly sensitive encoder capable of detecting for following potential failures:

  • Hot-end clogs
  • Knots in the filament spools
  • Filament run-out
  • Under extrusion such as when the nozzle temperature is too low,  or the nozzle is too close to the bed.

This add-on is provided as a drop-in replacement for the current filament run-out sensor. Consider purchasing two units for dual print head configuration.

Active Air Filter

The Modix Active Air Filter (MAAF) is an external device designed to purify the printer's chamber by capturing micro-particles and gas fumes emitted during 3D printing. The device maintains a continuous air cleansing process, using a multi-layer filtering system that includes a pre-filter, HEPA filter, and active carbon filter. Installing the MAAF is crucial for health, particularly when printing with materials beyond PLA, as sub-micron particles and fumes from plastic melting can pose risks. The device allows users to control airflow speed for effective filtration during printing and thorough cleansing afterward. Replacement filters are needed every 3 to 12 months, indicated by a front panel alert, ensuring consistent air quality and safety.

  • Modix Active Air Filter (MAAF) removes micro-particles and fumes from melted filament.
  • Three-filter system: Pre-Filter, HEPA Filter, Active Carbon Filter.
  • Installing an air filter is essential for health, especially when printing PETG, ABS, and beyond PLA.
  • Airflow control maintains temperature during printing and ensures thorough cleansing.
  • Spare filters required every 3 to 12 months, indicated by a front panel alert.
